ex-Liverpool midfielder David Thompson believes that Maurizio Sarri made a grave error by starting Eden Hazard as a false nine against his former side on Sunday.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast, Thompson said:
“Hazard came to life when he drifted out onto the left-hand side,
“He was not really involved in the game when he was central. He was up against [Virgil] Van Dijk, up against Fabinho, and it was difficult for him.
“He was always receiving the ball with his back to play. As soon as he went out to the left-hand side, he looked a different kettle of fish.
“The tactics from Sarri, who’s looking to push into the top four and that was a great opportunity for them to get into the top three and make a statement, goes there with really negative tactics.”
