The Manchester City manager was asked about a compliment that Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri had paid his team.
Manchester City are playing Chelsea on Sunday but Pep Guardiola couldn’t resist turning a question about Maurizio Sarri into a dig at Real Madrid.
The Chelsea manager, speaking in a earlier press conference on Friday, had described the Premier League champions as the best team in Europe in his opinion as he marked them out as significantly better than the West Londoners.
When that was put to Guardiola , the City boss decided revenge was a dish best served a few weeks later as he used the opportunity to have a go at Real Madrid and their coach Santiago Solari, who had criticised him for calling on the Blues to imitate Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus .
“Thank you so much but but I will be nice for the Madrid supporters, who are upset with me, who are saying the best team in Europe is Real Madrid because in the last three years they won and the best team by far in Europe in the last decade is Real Madrid,” said Guardiola, hissing the word best in a way that the page does not do justice.
“But Real Madrid is not the best team in the decade when you count leagues and cups and the other ones because Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich won [league titles] six or seven times, and they won two.
“But I’m pretty sure Solari understands my answer better. I am pretty sure they are happy now with me.”
