CHELSEA new boy Gonzalo Higuain has been the best player in training since his arrival from Juventus.
That is according to Blues team-mate Ethan Ampadu, who has been wowed by the 31-year-old striker’s finishing ability.
Higuain has hit the ground running at Chelsea, bagging a brace on his third appearance for the club in Saturday’s 5-0 win against Huddersfield.
When asked who the best player in training of late has been, Ampadu replied: “I’ve been really impressed with Higuain’s finishing since he arrived so I’d have to say him, he’s been really good.”
The storm clouds were gathering above Chelsea in the wake of Higuain’s debut – the 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth.
Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has been under increasing pressure due to their poor run of form.
And Ampadu revealed the experienced players in the dressing room have been key to lifting morale.
He told the club’s official website: “David Luiz is good at that, Azpilicueta as well, but as a team we are all aware when we have a bad result so we know we have to lift it again as quickly as possible.”
A major problem for Chelsea before Higuain’s arrival was their blunt attacking options.
Sarri was left less than impressed by Alvaro Morata before shipping him off to Atletico Madrid while Olivier Giroud is seen as a Plan B.
Eden Hazard was used out of position as a false nine to little success.
But Ampadu believes Antonio Rudiger could have been given a shot in attack.
“He’s strong and with his pace he could get in behind,” the 18-year-old utility man said. “Can he finish? Let’s hope so.”
