Eden Hazard makes big claim about the Chelsea captaincy amid calls for him to take on the armband

Eden Hazard has claimed that some of his Chelsea teammates deserve to be captain more than him.

With new manager Maurizio Sarri preferring to use Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz as his centre-backs this season, captain Gary Cahill has had to make do with a place on the substitutes’ bench.

Tipped to name Cesar Azpilicueta as the new skipper after wearing the armband numerous times in the past, the Italian boss surprised a few by keeping Cahill as the club’s permanent captain despite his lack of opportunities in the starting XI.

With Hazard leading out his team during pre-season, as well as the fact he captains his country, the 27-year-old was also a leading contender to take on the responsibility.

Claiming that he would be very happy if he was to be given the armband on a permanent basis, Hazard has revealed that he still feels like a leader on the pitch for the team having played for the Blues since 2012.

“Yes, I don’t want to say no of course,” he told Sky Sports when asked if he would like to be captain.

“I think some of the players deserve more to be captain than me.

“I mean outside football I always try to give everything for the fans, like in interviews I try to be an example, so if I’m the captain I would be happy.”

“On the pitch since five years or six years I feel like I’m the leader on the pitch,” he added.

“I’m the captain of Belgium but I don’t like to talk a lot.

“On the pitch I hope I show the right way to win.”
