Davide Zappacosta holds unenviable Premier League record after Chelsea’s defeat to Spurs

Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta has the unenviable new record of being the Premier League’s biggest benchwarmer so far this season.

The Italian right-back has been sat on the bench for a combined total of 1,164 league minutes in 2018/19 – more than any other outfield player in the division.

The £23m signing from Torino has started on the bench for every Chelsea league game this season, however he’s only been called upon once in that time, coming on in the 84th minute at home to Cardiff on September 15.

For the rest of the time he’s just been sat on the bench. Ready. Wating. Only nine other players have spent more time on the bench than the 26-year-old, all of whom are sub goalies.

Christian Fuchs has spent the next longest amount of time on the bench for an outfield player – 1,080 minutes.

He’s followed by Jermain Defoe [1,059 minutes], Daniel Sturridge [1,038 minutes], Leon Balogun [1,010 minutes] and Phil Foden [995 minutes].
