Chelsea have been busy over the past couple of months making sure that they keep their top players around as long as possible.
The latest player to be offered a new contract is Cesar Azpilicueta, with the deal expected to be worth around £150,000 per week and extending his spell at the club until 2022.
Azpilicueta’s current deal is worth £120,000 a week and runs out in 2020. Despite having two years left to run on the contract, Chelsea were keen to retain his services for the long term.
The Spaniard joins Marcos Alonso and N’Golo Kante in signing a new Chelsea contract recently.
At the end of October, Marcos Alonso signed a new five year deal worth £150,000 per week. Then, at the end of November, N’Golo Kante put pen to paper on a five year deal which will see him earning £290,000 per week.
Cesar Azpilicueta has been a mainstay of the Chelsea team since joining in 2012. He played every single game in the 2016-17 season, and 37 out of 38 games in 2017-18 and 2015-16, with only one of those appearances coming as a substitute.
He has helped the team win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, and a Europa League trophy. Plus, he has been given the captain’s armband this season.
Azpilicueta has played all over the back line, including in a back three under Antonio Conte, however he has been moved back to the right-back role under Maurizio Sarri.
Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League, having conceded 11 goals in 13 games, giving them one of the best defensive records in the league.
