Gianfranco Zola makes a promise to Chelsea fans over Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud

Gianfranco Zola has promised Chelsea fans that Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud will continue to keep scoring under Maurizio Sarri after getting through their goal drought.

Both players had struggled at the start of the campaign to find the back of the net, but the Spanish striker has scored five goals in the last six games to get his season really up and running.

For Giroud, the Frenchman netted his first goal in 794 minutes for the Blues on Thursday night after nodding in the winner in the 1-0 Europa League victory over BATE Borisov.

And Zola insists there is more to come from the two front men.

“Morata has scored four goals in the last five games and Giroud scored last night. You may expect the main strikers to be the main scorers, but sometimes that is not the case, especially if you play differently,” Chelsea’s assistant head coach told Sky Sports.

“Maurizio asks the strikers to do a lot of work for the team and even if they don’t score then they are very important. They are learning about this and at the moment they are probably busy in learning how to do this and they have less attention for scoring.

“But that will come and I am 100% sure they will come because they have a good attitude on the pitch and during the week and this is very important and they will improve.

“The strikers for Maurizio, they always score a lot of goals, always. Maybe not at the beginning, not straight away, but in the end they score. That is what I am hoping for will be the case here as well.”

Zola’s claims are certainly backed up in stats with Gonzalo Higuain notching an impressive 36 Serie A goals for Napoli in the 2015/16 season, Sarri’s first season in charge of the club.

Dries Mertens scored another impressive 28 in the league the following season, with another 18 last season before Sarri made the switch to England.

Blues supporters will be hoping for similar numbers out of their strikers, or even anything close would give Chelsea a great shot at winning another Premier League title.
