Azpilicueta, Fabregas, Hazard – The players Chelsea must discuss new contracts with very soon

It’s going to be a busy few months at Chelsea as the club get contract talks underway with a number of key players.

Having parted with Thibaut Courtois in the summer given the real prospect of losing him on a free transfer, the club must act swiftly to ensure the same thing doesn’t happen come next July.

Eden Hazard has been heavily linked with a move away from the club over the past few months, yet it appears that he will be remaining in west London until the end of the season amid talk of a big-money transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.

While a new contract for their star man is quite rightly priority for everyone connected with the club at present given his stunning form, there are a number of other players who the club need to sit down and discuss new terms with.

After extending Pedro and Marcos Alonso’s contracts since the start of August, discussions need to take place with a number of first-team regulars.

David Luiz, now back in the starting XI under Maurizio Sarri, will be out of contract come the end of next season, while former Arsenal duo Cesc Fabregas and Olivier Giroud are also in the same boat.

While talks with the midfielder and his representatives have yet to take place, reports suggest that Fabregas will have to take a significant pay cut to remain with the Blues.

Despite only making one Premier League appearance under Sarri so far this season, the 31-year-old has claimed that he is still happy at Stamford Bridge at present.

“I still believe in myself a lot and think I can add so much to this team,” he said, as reported by the Evening Standard .

“Let’s see what happens but I am happy here.

“In life, not just football, timing is the most important thing.

“You don’t have to rush decisions, you don’t have to talk before things happen.”

As well as Fabregas’ deal set to run out at present come the summer, Gary Cahill and Willy Caballero will also be available to walk away for nothing as it stands.

The former will no doubt look to end his long association with the club given he wants to play on a regular basis, while you would expect the latter to once again extend his deal towards the back end of the season given it’s not a priority at present.

As well as extending deals for players whose current contracts run out this season, the club do also need to talk with players who currently have an extra year on their contracts.

While Chelsea will be hoping to agree on new terms with Hazard ASAP, the club must also do likewise with Willian and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Not only is there a danger of key players running their contracts down to the final year, transfer valuations will also plummet, as was the case with Courtois’ £35million move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Having lost out on the goalkeeper, the Blues cannot afford to do the same with Hazard and Willian.

However, that won’t necessarily be the case if Chelsea start talks sooner rather than later.
