Paul Merson believes that if Chelsea had a top goalscorer, they could challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

And the Arsenal legend says they had the perfect one just two seasons ago in Diego Costa.

Eden Hazard is the top scorer in the league so far this season with seven goals, but the Blues strikers have struggled, with Alvaro Morata finding the back of the net twice and Olivier Giroud yet to score.

Manager Maurizio Sarri does not think his team is at the same level as City or Liverpool this season, suggesting that transforming from sixth last season to a position to challenge for the title is not feasible.

Merson thinks with Costa in the side they could.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, he said: “He’s a good manager, it surprises me that he hasn’t won anything.

“He’s brought David Luiz back into the team, playing as a four, but in the nitty gritty big games, defensively I don’t think they’re going to be good enough.

“Going forward, Hazard is the best player in the Premier League at the moment, but they haven’t got other players who can do things.

“If they had Diego Costa playing up front, these would be big players in the Premier League.”
