Pat Nevin does not believe Chelsea FC will be able to compete for the Premier League title with Manchester City and Liverpool FC this season.
Chelsea FC have taken 17 points from their opening seven games and have been the surprise package so far this year after finishing fifth in the Premier League last term.
Nevin believes Chelsea FC will continue to improve this season, but the gap between them and the top is too great.
“They will get better as the season goes on,“ Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“It will take them a while to get close to Liverpool and Manchester City.”
Maurizio Sarri was brought in at Chelsea FC from Napoli this summer and was tasked with bring a more exciting brand of football to Stamford Bridge.
As with all Chelsea FC bosses, he is expected to get results, but not even Roman Abramovich would have foreseen beating and drawing with Liverpool FC over two games in the last week.
The impressive results have led many to reconsider them as title hopefuls, but Nevin believes that they are too far behind City and Liverpool FC to really mount a challenge.
They also have to contend with Europa League football on a Thursday, which sees clubs play comparitively small teams in far off places with facilities which do not always match those seen in the Champions League.
Many good teams have come unstuck due to the Europa League and this is most likely what Nevin believes will be what ultimately restricts his former club.
