John Terry has been hailed as ‘one of the best centre-halves to ever play in the Premier League’ after the Chelsea legend decided to hang up his boots this weekend.
The former Chelsea and England defender announced his retirement from football on Sunday following his departure from Aston Villa at the end of last season.
The tributes have poured in for Terry, whose decorated 23-year career included five Premier League titles, victories in the Champions League and Europa League and five FA Cups.
The 37-year-old is now being tipped to go straight into coaching, with he and former Arsenal rival Thierry Henry linked with taking over at Villa Park.
And former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has told talkSPORT he is the best defender he ever played with, and one of the Premier League’s best ever.
“For me, John Terry is definitely up there,” Schwarzer said on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“It’s very difficult to pick just one player, but if you talk about the top centre halves to ever play in the Premier League, I would say he has to be there.
“He’s certainly the best centre-half I’ve actually played with in the same team.
“But if you’re talking about across the league over the last 20 years or so, he’s definitely in the top two or three centre-halves to ever play in the Premier League.”
