CHELSEA are now contenders for the Premier League title after a surprising start to the season under new boss Maurizio Sarri.
That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Chelsea are unbeaten so far under Sarri, winning five of their first seven Premier League games.
They came within two minutes of beating Liverpool on Saturday until Daniel Sturridge struck late to secure a 1-1 draw for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Carragher admits he and many others predicted Liverpool to be the main challengers for Manchester City for the Premier League title at the beginning of the season.
However, he says Chelsea have shown they are realistic challengers as well.
“I think so, yeah,” Jamie Carragher said.
“I think before the season I think a lot of people were talking about Man City and Liverpool.
“I think the surprise has been Chelsea because of the new manager, a completely different style of play from (Antonio) Conte and even (Jose) Mourinho going further back, how Chelsea have been successful.
“So I think how quickly Chelsea have adapted to Sarri’s way of playing (has been a surprise).
“I think it was a really good game between Chelsea and Liverpool.”
Manchester United have struggled and sit 10th with three defeats already this term.
But Tottenham and Arsenal have found their form and Carragher expects a competitive race for the top four this season.
“Manchester United, that has been a big surprise,” he continued.
“We can’t forget that they finished second last season, were the closest team to Manchester City.
“Tottenham look like they’ve just got themselves back after a couple of defeats and Arsenal have won seven in a row now.
“So it looks like it’s hotting up for the title but also the top-four positions.”
