Maurizio Sarri believes his Chelsea side must improve defensively if they are to reach the ‘same level’ as Manchester City or Liverpool to challenge for the title.
The Blues have made a superb start to the Premier League campaign with four wins from four and take on Cardiff City tomorrow at Stamford Bridge to extend that winning run.
In the process, Sarri’s side have also kept two clean sheets, shipping one goal against Newcastle United and another two against Arsenal in the 3-2 victory at the Bridge.
However, despite having the same amount of points as Liverpool and two more than City so far, Sarri believes his team are not on their level yet and things need to start getting tighter at the back.
“At the moment, I can answer Manchester City or Liverpool. At the moment,” Sarri said.
“We need another step, I think, to be at the same level. I think so [that this season is too soon for Chelsea], I hope not.
“It’s very difficult to close a gap of 30 points at the beginning of the season. To close that gap in only one season is very difficult. But I think also we need to improve, and we can improve.
“Because my feeling is now we are not a very solid team in the defensive phase, of course.
“So I think we need to improve. And we can improve. My feeling during training is this team can improve.”
