Frank Lampard has confirmed that he wanted to lure Ethan Ampadu to Derby County on a loan deal from Chelsea this summer.
The youngster impressed at Stamford Bridge last season following his summer move from Exeter City, featuring in seven games under Antonio Conte.
Capped by Wales last season after his impressive performances for the Blues in all competitions, the 18-year-old was handed his first competitive start for his national side last week in the 4-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.
Ampadu caught the eye for Ryan Giggs’ side in the win and a number of Chelsea fans have been calling for Maurizio Sarri to play him in the first team ever since.
While it remains to be seen if the versatile player will feature against Cardiff City this weekend, Lampard has revealed that he wanted Ampadu to join fellow Chelsea youngsters Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori at Pride Park.
“I looked at him (Ampadu). I spoke to the (Chelsea) manager and he told me he wants him in their squad, so it was a very short conversation,” said Lampard, as reported by Derbyshire Live.
“I was very impressed with Sarri. I think he is a great manager, great character. He was very nice to me about it.
“Quite rightly, he probably wants Ampadu as part of his squad. He is a fantastic talent.
“It was a question (we asked), and we have fully moved on.”
Speaking about Ampadu’s performance against Ireland, he joked: “I shed a tear when he played so well!
“I know him, and similar to Mason Mount, he is a young player with real ability and a fantastic attitude.”
