“This is why I didn’t join Chelsea”: Gonzalo Higuain

New AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain has claimed that he and his new club can bring out the best in each other to “achieve great things”.

Earlier this week, the Argentina international moved to San Siro on loan from Juventus together with Mattia Caldara, while Leonardo Bonucci went the other way.

Higuain admitted that Chelsea had approached Juve regarding his services but the 30-year-old felt that Maurizio Sarri was the only one at Stamford Bridge who wanted him.

“The esteem in which I hold Sarri isn’t new,” Higuain told reporters at a Milan press conference. “But the only person who wanted me there was him. Everyone wanted me here.

“First of all it was Leonardo who convinced me with the very nice things he said about me. Then also the coach [Gennaro Gattuso] as well as the club for investing in me.

“This is a team that, in my opinion, can achieve great things. A team with the characteristics that can allow me to be at my best.

“As well as the challenge of, along with my teammates, bringing Milan back to what it was, meaning reaching as high as possible.”

Higuain has scored 40 Serie A goals for Juve over the last two seasons.
