Maurizio Sarri admitted he was surprised by how technically talented N’Golo Kante was when he arrived at Chelsea.
The new Chelsea manager is encouraging a more attacking mindset from Kante, who is known as one of the best defensive midfielders in football.
Kante scored in Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture against Huddersfield and continues to impress his head coach with his work-rate.
But after Sarri switched Chelsea’s formation to a back four, he was amazed at the technical capabilities of Kante.
‘Kante is a great midfielder,’ Sarri said. ‘He can play any position in my midfield. It’s not a problem for him.
‘I was surprised about the technical qualities from Kante.’
Kante has helped Chelsea maintain their 100 per cent start to the new season, and a visit from Bournemouth is the next challenge for Sarri’s side.
Eddie Howe is in charge at Bournemouth and Sarri explained he spent time getting to know the young coach last season.
‘Yes, I think very well [of Howe],’ Sarri said.
‘Eddie came in very well, in the last season I went to Bournemouth for a friendly and stayed there for three days.
‘I know him very well, he is a very interesting young coach and he will make a mark in English football.
‘They are dangerous and the match will be very difficult. We want to be in control of the match and try to gain points.’
