Paul Merson: What I really think about new Chelsea FC signing

Paul Merson has backed Chelsea FC record signing Kepa to blossom into a top goalkeeper over time.
The Blues made Kepa the most expensive goalkeeper in the world on the final day of the Premier League’s summer transfer window.

Chelsea FC signed the 23-year-old in a £71.5m deal from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao to replace Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international completed a switch to Real Madrid from Chelsea FC in a £31m deal to end months of speculation.

Chelsea FC’s record signing made his debut in a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium last weekend.

Former Arsenal star Merson defended Kepa’s transfer fee ahead of his first taste of a London derby.

“He is a young goalkeeper,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He will be there for a long time. The older you get the better you get. You’d be shocked if he won the golden glove this year.

Chelsea FC finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.

The Blues signed four players in the summer transfer window to substantially bolster Maurizio Sarri’s squad ahead of the new season.
