Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.
The 23-year-old has become the most expensive goalkeeper in the world having signed for £71million with Athletic announcing yesterday that his buyout clause had been met.
The Spanish ‘keeper is the number two behind Manchester United star David De Gea and was part of Spain’s World Cup 2018 squad.
He has one international cap and starred for his former club over the past two seasons.
This was enough to convince the west London club to eclipse Liverpool’s £66.8million fee they paid for Brazilian number one Alisson Becker.
He arrives on a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge and the Basque star was delighted to be joining.
“It’s a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life,” he told Chelsea’s official website.
“So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League. It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea have announced that Thibaut Courtois is set join Real Madrid with Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic coming the other way on a season-long loan deal.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Chelsea said: “Chelsea and Real Madrid have tonight agreed terms for the permanent transfer of Thibaut Courtois subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing a medical.
“Subject to the completion of the deal Mateo Kovacic will join the Blues on a season-long loan.”
