Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Speculation has been rife all summer that the Blues would lose Thibaut Courtois and with Deadline Day approaching, Real Madrid finally made their move and the Belgian put pen to paper on a six-year deal.
However, Chelsea weren’t prepared to let their number one goalkeeper leave the club without securing a replacement and news soon emerged that Kepa’s release clause had been met at Athletic Bilbao.
That’s no small statement either with Bilbao setting the threshold at a world-record €80 million after an approach from – of all clubs – Real Madrid back in January.
Nevertheless, Chelsea have their man and supporters will look forward to seeing their latest goalkeeper ply his trade in the Premier League.
Chelsea sign Kepa Arrizabalaga
In his arrival statement, Kepa told the club: “So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League.
“It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well.”
On the whole, Chelsea fans have been very happy with the choice of replacement and positive reactions have been rolling in on Twitter.
John Terry reacts on Instagram
Such a major transfer also means that Chelsea legends and those associated with the club will also cast their verdict in the coming days such as Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Gianfranco Zola.
One of the first major Chelsea personalities to react, though, has been a certain John Terry.
Supporters noticed his Instagram story after Chelsea confirmed the deal and Terry really pulled it out the bag.
He’s not necessarily known for his social media humour, but even someone like Peter Crouch would appreciate this. Check out his post:
Brilliant stuff from JT.
Terry used a classic image of him making a cameo in goal for Chelsea back in 2006 when both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudiccini suffered serious injuries in a Premier League clash with Reading.
The Chelsea legend only pulled on the gloves for a matter of minutes but – for what it’s worth – he did manage to keep a clean sheet as the Blues edged out a 1-0 win.
Sadly, however, that cameo wasn’t enough to inspire a sensational re-signging from Chelsea, funnily enough.
Nevertheless, we’re sure Terry is as excited as his fellow Chelsea supporters at the prospect of such an exciting young goalkeeper making the move to west London.
Dealing with the physicality of the Premier League and the pressure of his world-record transfer fee won’t be easy, yet he has all the tools to be very successful on English shores.
They’ll be numerous big names backing him to follow in the footsteps of both Courtois, Cech and – technically speaking – Terry himself.
