Frank Lampard hoping for ‘romantic’ clash with Chelsea in League Cup third round

Undermanned Derby County thrashed undermanned Hull City 4-0 in Tuesday’s second-round League Cup match, in front of the lowest attendance (4,666) at KCOM since the Tigers moved there 16 years ago.

Premier League clubs, which also play in Europe enter the fray in the next round. That sets-up a potential glamour match between Frank’s nascent Derby project and the club where he’s a legend, Chelsea (the draw is on Thursday). Naturally, he was asked about it.

Naturally, he loved the idea.

“It’s an obvious question for me, it would be nice. For the romantic link Chelsea would be a good one.”

One of the stars of Chelsea’s constellation of young players is Derby loanee Mason Mount, who scored for the 4th time in 7 matches for County, and 11th time in his last 13 matches if we include the tail end of his time at Vitesse.

Chelsea would need to give Derby permission to use our own loan players against us in the Carabao Cup, but if we do then we might have the chance to see how young Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori (who also played on Tuesday) stack up against Maurizio Sarri’s second team.

And of course we would more than welcome the chance to see Super Frank (and Jody Morris) back at the Bridge, even if in the wrong dugout.

With nine points from five matches in the league, Lamps is still feeling his way into both management, in general, and The Championship specifically. But he finds the prospect of testing himself against the top division appealing, even this early in his tenure.

“The big boys are coming in which will be a great test for us. It’s a competition we want to do well in.”

You never know what a football season is going to cough up. A tie with Derby would add spice to a competition that too often feels tasteless and superfluous.

Make it so, gods of the tombola.
