Kepa Arrizabalaga is on the brink of joining Chelsea after paying his transfer fee to Athletic Bilbao.
Chelsea chiefs have agreed to trigger Kepa’s release clause worth €80m (£71.8m).
When a release clause is met, the player at the centre of the deal has to officially deposit the money to the selling club.
According to Spanish publication AS, Athletic Bilbao received the payment from two of the player’s lawyers at 9.22am this morning.
Kepa is set to become the most expensive goalkeeper in football history.
He takes the title from former Roma stopper Alisson, who cost Liverpool €75m (£67.3m) last month.
AS claim Kepa will travel to England this afternoon to complete the switch to Chelsea.
He is expected to put pen to paper on a five-year contract.
Real Madrid head coach Julen Lopetegui is fed up with Chelsea target Mateo Kovacic.
Chelsea are set to sign Kovacic, 24, on a season-long loan following talks with the Champions League winners.
He has publicly expressed a desire to quit the Bernabeu and left training yesterday midway through the session.
Lopetegui held talks with Real Madrid bosses in New York after their pre-season friendly against Roma to discuss the Croatia international’s future.
According to AS, Lopetegui initially wanted to keep Kovacic on the club’s books but has decided it is time for him to go.
The former Spain manager attempted to convince Kovacic to stay but was disappointed when the midfielder personally informed him of his intention to leave.
AS claim the 24-year-old told Lopetegui he would only stay if he was guaranteed a place in the team.
Lopetegui admitted he could not issue such a promise.
Thibaut Courtois is waiting to undergo a medical ahead of a move to Real Madrid.
Courtois has gone AWOL from pre-season training in a bid to force through a move to the Champions League winners.
Chelsea are yet to officially accept an offer from Real Madrid worth £35m plus Kovacic on loan, according to Sky Sports.
Courtois is eager to return to Madrid for family reasons.
He spent three years on loan at Atletico Madrid before establishing himself at Chelsea and his children live in the Spanish capital.
The 26-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
Real Madrid expect Courtois to arrive in the city tomorrow.
