Danny Drinkwater could still leave Chelsea this month despite the transfer window closing in England last Thursday.
Signed from Leicester City 12 months ago, the midfielder only made 22 appearances for the Blues in all competitions last term, with his last game in the league coming in the defeat against Man City at the beginning of March.
Left out of the squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win at Huddersfield Town, it once again looks like that Drinkwater will find opportunities in the first team hard to come by.
New manager Maurizio Sarri has brought in Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic so far this summer, while Ross Barkley has returned to full fitness and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is now back in west London following his loan spell with Crystal Palace.
With Tiemoue Bakayoko sealing a season-long loan move to AC Milan on Tuesday, Drinkwater may be next to follow his fellow midfielder out of the door.
According to reports in the Daily Star, the player could in fact be set for a shock loan move to one of Europe’s top leagues.
Bundesliga club Schalke, who have been linked with a loan move for Loftus-Cheek, could be a possible destination for the player, although he could choose to remain and fight for his place in the capital.
The transfer windows in Germany and Spain close on Friday, August 31, while if any Italian club was interested in Drinkwater they would have until Friday to complete a deal.
Despite talk of a possible move to the Bundesliga, Sky Sports claim that Schalke are in fact not interested in loan deals for any players.
The German club, who have also been linked with Danny Rose, are targeting a new left-back and only a budget of around £6.24million to make a new signing.
