Chelsea are reportedly attempting to beat Manchester City to the signing of Italy international midfielder Jorginho, according to Manchester Evening News.
The Premier League club, who are yet to sign any new players during this summer’s transfer window, have been linked with trying to hijack the Napoli star’s move to defending league champions City ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
The 26-year-old, who has eight international caps for the Azzurri, scored four goals and provided four assists in 39 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit last season.
Jorginho, who joined the Italian side from Hellas Verona back in 2014, has netted six times in 160 games overall for the club, winning the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.
It is understood that Manchester City have already agreed personal terms with the defensive central midfielder, but they are yet to reach an agreement with Napoli over the sale of one of their star players, leaving the door open for Chelsea to make a late swoop.
The Blues’ interest would be welcomed by Napoli, who are looking to pocket as much money from the deal, valuing Jorginho at around £53m.
He is contracted at the Stadio San Paolo until June 2020.
With Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri still tipped to replace Antonio Conte as Chelsea manager ahead of the new season, there is still a possibility that Jorginho could end up at Stamford Bridge this summer, rather than the Etihad Stadium.
