Liverpool and Chelsea are battling it out over the signature of Barcelona’s £52m-rated goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen this summer, according to reports in Spain via the Daily Mail.
Cillessen made his name during a five-year spell at Ajax where he won 3 Eredivisie titles before earning a move to Barcelona in 2016 but his time at the Nou Camp hasn’t gone according to plan.
The 29-year-old has struggled to establish himself as he’s been forced to play second fiddle to Marc-Ter Stegen with Cillessen making just 2 appearances in La Liga and the Champions League last season.
It’s led to speculation that Cillessen is eyeing a move this summer in search of regular first-team football and the Daily Mail are citing a report from Mundo Deportivo that claims Liverpool and Chelsea have expressed their interest in bringing him to England.
The Spanish publication says Cillessen is assessing his options and although Barca is reluctant to lose their No.2, they will consider any offers that are mutually beneficial to the club and player.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new No.1 as Simon Mignolet is set to leave Anfield after falling out of favour while the future of Loris Karius is in doubt following his horror show during the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Liverpool has been linked with the likes of Jan Oblak and Alisson Becker in recent weeks but it seems Klopp is also eyeing Cillessen as a cheaper alternative to his other reported targets.
Chelsea is also on the lookout for a new goalkeeper as Thibaut Courtois is being tipped for a return to Spain after failing to agree on terms over a new contract and Cillessen has seemingly been lined-up as a potential replacement.
However, the Dutch international won’t come cheap as the Metro claim Cillessen’s release clause is set at £52m and with three-years remaining on his contract, Barca are under no pressure to offer much of a discount.
