According to a report from Spanish outlet Marca this evening, La Liga giants Real Madrid have given up on their chase of Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard.
Gifted Belgian wide-man Hazard has long been regarded as one of the finest players in world football, with his pace, dribbling ability, eye for goal and incredible knack for maintaining possession under relentless pressure having proven crucial to the successes of Chelsea for 5 seasons now.
On the move?
Despite his near-untouchable status at Stamford Bridge, though, Hazard has become increasingly linked with an exit from the English capital over recent years, with Real Madrid having done little to deter rumours that they would be interested in bringing the former Lille star to the Bernabeu.
Reports stemming from Spain over recent weeks had seen links between the parties intensify, with some outlets even going as far as to suggest that Hazard has given his word to Zinedine Zidane and co. over a move next summer.
However, in a surprise update coming courtesy of Marca this evening, it is now being claimed that European champions Real have in fact ‘abandoned’ their pursuit of Hazard, in favour of developing youngster Marco Asensio.
21-year-old Spanish sensation Asensio emerged as one of world football’s most promising young prospects last season, with his incredible technique, athleticism and hammer of a left-foot leading many to suggest that the former Mallorca man should be viewed in the same light as PSG starlet Kylian Mbappe.
This season has surprisingly seen Asensio consigned to the bench for much of Real’s season, but, as per the aforementioned report from Marca, the La Roja international is still regarded as the future of the club.
One senior board figure at the Bernabeu reportedly had the following to say when questioned on a move for Eden Hazard during a recent meeting, perfectly showcasing the club’s faith in Asensio:
‘Why would we bring in the Belgian if we have Asensio?’
While it remains to be seen whether Los Merengues have truly packed in their chase of Hazard, it is still believed that the Spanish champions have Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois firmly in their sights, with the brilliant Belgian shot-stopper rumoured to be angling for a return to his home country.
