Thibaut Courtois is reportedly set to sign a new bumper contract – making him the first Chelsea player to earn more than £200,000 a week.
Belgian goalkeeper Courtois confirmed earlier in the month that he was close to agreeing terms over a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues determined to fend off interest from Real Madrid.
Courtois, along with Manchester United‘s David de Gea, have emerged as targets for Real as Zinedine Zidane searches the market for a long-term replacement for Keylor Navas.
But The Sun say Courtois is now set to become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world by signing a new deal that will more than double his current salary.
Courtois has developed into one of the best shot-stoppers in the world since joining Chelsea from Genk seven years ago and he will be rewarded with a stunning new contract.
Speaking about his future in west London, Courtois said at the start of the year:
‘It has just turned the new year, so we will wait a few weeks and then sit around the table.
‘I’m happy at Chelsea and a deal is close. Do Eden [Hazard] and I encourage each other? Yes. He will say “if you sign, I will sign” and I say the same to him.’
As well as tying Courtois and Hazard down to new deals, Antonio Conte is also hoping to bolster his squad this month, with a forward and a left back at the top of his wish-list.
Andy Caroll, Christian Benteke and Fernando Llorente have been raised as potential targets but Chelsea are said to have turned their attentions to Roma duo Edin Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri.
