Chelsea are expected to announce the signing of Roma full-back Emerson Palmieri over the coming hours in a deal worth an initial £18m, according to the Daily Mail.
Antonio Conte is looking to further strengthen his squad this month and a new left-back to offer competition for Marcos Alonso has been a priority for the Blues boss for some time.
Palmieri emerged as a prime target earlier this month and the Evening Standard reported last week that the full-back was due in London to undergo his medical and finalise personal terms.
The proposed move was delayed while Chelsea also tried to thrash-out a deal to sign Roma striker Edin Dzeko but that transfer appears to have stalled as the Blues have so far failed to get an agreement in place.
The Daily Mail are now citing a report from Gazzetta dello Sport that claims an announcement for the signing of Palmieri is imminent and could even be confirmed today.
The Italian outlet goes on to say that Chelsea will pay Roma an initial £18m for the Brazilian defender with a further £4m coming in performance based add-ons.
There has been no official confirmation from Chelsea [at the time of writing] but it seems an announcement is close and Palmieri should be unveiled as Conte’s latest new signing over the coming hours.
Conte desperately needs another option for the left wing-back position as Alonso has been virtually ever-present this season and options are limited after Kenedy completed his loan move to Newcastle.
Palmieri joined Roma in 2015 and enjoyed an encouraging start to life at the Stadio Olympico but has been restricted to just 15 minutes of Serie A football this season so it seems he’s ready for a fresh start in London.
