Why Marcos Alonso picked up a deliberate yellow card vs Southampton

Chelsea 1 – Southampton 0

It was far from simple for Chelsea at home to Southampton on Saturday. The Blues won out thanks to a solitary goal by Marcos Alonso.

The Spanish left wing back has scored more goals than any other defenders in the Premier League since joining Chelsea before last season.

Chelsea’s winner came on the stroke of half-time, with 48 minutes played. Eden Hazard won a free-kick on the edge of the box.

And, Marcos Alonso came up trumps with a fine strike past Fraser Forster.

Did Marcos Alonso pick up a deliberate booking late on vs Southampton?

As you would expect from Southampton, the Saints turned up the pressure late on to secure an equaliser.

The strong Chelsea defence held out against Southampton but there were some scary moments for the Premier League champions.

On 94 minutes, Marcos Alonso picked up what many believe to be a deliberate booking.

The Spaniard was on four bookings for the season so far, another one means he misses a game…

Marcos Alonso misses Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup!

The game Alonso now misses is Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Whilst this is an important game for Chelsea, the quarter-finals of the League Cup, it is very unlikely that Alonso would have played in that game.

As a result, some Chelsea fans, as can be seen below, have noticed that Alonso got the booking on purpose.

The deadline for five bookings to be wiped takes place a week today on December 31, 2017.

Alonso effectively saved himself from missing a fixture had he been booked at Everton next Saturday. Or in the two home games before the new year, versus Brighton and Stoke.

Pretty smart and a fair few people have already noticed…

It is though worth pointing out that players have been banned before for picking up deliberate bookings.
