The Chelsea fans here have been pretty happy with their side’s performances this season, but they do recognise one major problem in the squad.
The Chelsea attack, for all of its success this term, has a pretty significant issue, and it surrounds Michy Batshuayi.
The Belgian, simply put, has proven that he isn’t good enough to compete with Morata, and so in January, changes are needed.
The Belgian is certainly a candidate to face the chop in January, and with a clear need for another forward regardless, Conte will be keen to bring in a new player. One player that would be perfectly suited is Dries Mertens.
Mertens, though an attacking midfielder earlier in his career, has recently transitioned to more of a traditional attacking role, and it’s fair to say that he has taken to it like a duck to water.
He bagged a remarkable 28 goals last season, and has already followed that up with 10 more this season. Indeed, he’s arguably turned into Napoli’s best player, and that’s no easy feat given the quality that they have.
Providing electric pace, technical brilliance and a natural goalscoring instinct, the Belgian could be the perfect player to partner Alvaro Morata.
He’s more of a direct threat, with his pace allowing him to run at defenders, making him a great alternative to Morata’s more technical style of play.
He’d, of course, want to play regular football, but he’d certainly get a decent amount of games at Stamford Bridge, given how many competitions the Blues are currently competing in.
What’s more, at 30-years-old, the prospect of winning a few trophies would certainly appeal.
Mertens would be a fantastic signing for Chelsea – agreed?
