Antonio Conte has pointed to Arsenal’s fifth-placed finish last season as a warning to his Chelsea team this season.
The Blues bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League on Boxing Day when they sealed a solid 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion in front of their home fans thanks to goals from Marcos Alonso and Alvaro Morata.
Chelsea are still in third place in the Premier League table however, and it seems that Manchester City are already out of sight at the summit.
The Blues will try and fight to defend their Premier League title but it is looking increasingly likely that they will surrender their top-flight crown to Manchester City.
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season as they missed out on a spot in this campaign’s Champions League.
And Conte has pointed to the Gunners’ struggles last term as a warning to his Chelsea side.
Speaking at his post match news conference on Boxing Day, Conte said: “There is a great motivation for us and the other teams to find a place in the Champions League for next year.
“Last year Manchester United and Arsenal finished fifth and sixth. We want to try to improve.”
Chelsea will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they take on Stoke City in front of their home fans at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues won the title in Conte’s first campaign at the club last term.
