Antonio Conte ready to take major gamble on Chelsea star for Liverpool clash

Antonio Conte has hinted he’ll rest Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

The Spaniard’s started 16 of Chelsea’s 19 matches so far this term after playing a bit-part role in the Blues’ title-winning campaign last season.

The sale of Nemanja Matic and the unavailability of new signings Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater meant Fabregas was an almost certain starter at the beginning of the season but Conte has more options now.

Chelsea travel to Anfield tomorrow to face Liverpool and Conte has hinted Fabregas may be rested against the Reds.

‘Last season, maybe he didn’t deserve to start the games but now he’s deserving to play regularly,’ said Conte.

‘At the same time I understand he needs a bit of rest because he’s playing every game.

‘Now I have four midfielders in good form and I need to have rotation.’

After a lacklustre start to their title defence, Chelsea are now one point behind second and through to the last-16 of the Champions League.

Liverpool are favourites at Anfield but arrive into the game on the back of a 3-3 draw against Sevilla in which the Reds threw away a three-goal lead.
