Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea have a very good chance of winning the Champions League under Antonio Conte this season.
The Blues are back in Europe’s elite club competition after having missed out on a spot in European competition altogether last season when they ended up 10th in the 2015-16 campaign.
Chelsea kicked off their group stage campaign in style last week when they secured a thumping 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag to take their first small step towards reaching the last 16.
The west London side have only won the Premier League once in their history, after having lifted the trophy under Roberto Di Matteo back in 2012.
However, former Arsenal man Merson believes that Conte’s side have the ability to progress far in the Champions League this season after missing out last term.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “I think Chelsea have a genuine chance of winning the Champions League.
“They have done great to turn things around after a difficult start.
“They have so much guile now Eden Hazard is back, a good system and players who can hurt you as well as those who can defend. They just need another striker. They are one player short of being virtually unstoppable.”
Chelsea are preparing for their League Cup third round clash against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues, who won the title last season, will then return to Premier League action at Stoke on Saturday as they look to return to winning ways following their goalless draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
