Here is the latest Manchester United squad news known ahead of kick-off against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is unavailable as he sits out the first of three matches after he was suspended for elbowing Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings, so Jose Mourinho will have to cope without his top goalscorer and unfortunately that looks like the least of his worries up front.
Wayne Rooney suffered an injury in training after a tackle with Phil Jones so is ruled out of the match. With Ibrahimovic out as well, it would create an opportunity for Marcus Rashford to start up front but he won’t play either due to illness. To make matters even worse, Anthony Martial will miss out through injury which means Mourinho has no recognised senior striker available in his squad – even the forgotten James Wilson is currently sidelined with a ligament injury. We might see Mourinho start himself up front tonight.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan is of course available after making a goalscoring return in the 1-1 draw against FC Rostov and on paper he might be the most likely player to start up front. He’d certainly be a better option than Marouane Fellaini who many feel Mourinho could start as a striker.
Eric Bailly can return tonight having served his suspension in the Europa League and given how poor both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were in the heart of defence in Russia, I’d say that is desperately needed at Stamford Bridge. Another player who is available is Luke Shaw who was left behind for the Russia trip but is fit to start.
