Paul Merson prediction: “This team will win the Premier League this season”

The Arsenal legend talks up Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side in the title race

Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to win the Premier League title.

The Blues have made an impressive start to life under new manager Antonio Conte after Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last term.

Chelsea eased to comfortable victories over West Ham United, Watford and Burnley to maintain a 100 per cent start to the 2016-17 season and underline their status as title contenders.

However, the Blues endured a winless September after a stalemate with Swansea City followed by losses to their title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

The west London side have bounced back with a series of impressive performances throughout October and September to hoist Chelsea to the top of the table ahead of the visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea were 3-0 winners against defending champions Leicester City before a 4-0 win against their former manager Jose Mourinho and his Manchester United side.

The west London outfit produced their best performance of the 2016-17 season so far in a 5-0 demolition of Everton.

Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson explained why he believes Chelsea will win the title.

“Chelsea deserve to be top and they’re still my pick to win the league. The key for them is the manager,” Merson said.

“He’s worked hard on them and found the perfect system. David Luiz suddenly looks like Beckenbauer!

“But it’s the wing backs that make the difference, they’ve been phenomenal because that is a graveyard shift.

“I watched Victor Moses score the other day and Marcos Alonso was the first over to congratulate him.

“That tells you everything about how much ground they cover.”
