Will Jose Stick to His Rhythm of Play or Go Deeper in The Midfield This Transfer Window?

Our main team has remained quite unchanged throughout this double winning season. Mourinho maintained that he liked stability in the team, though he agreed last week that he would like a little more depth.

‘We need a couple of players to give more strength and depth to the squad, We want to keep the same number of players and have a more uniform group in terms of not quality but experience, to give us that little bit of extra in case we progress in the Champions League’.

He is known not to rotate the defenders or goalkeepers a lot keeping in mind the importance of good understanding at the back. But we do lack depth further up the pitch. Our lack of rotation in the busy festive period has resulted in players being very tired ever since. The lesser said about Oscar’s performance after Christmas the better. We have not been very impressive in the second half of the season apart from the 5-0 win over Swansea. There were games when Mourinho was looking at the bench desperately only to the find players ( read Salah, Schurrle and Cuadrado) quite disappointing. I would gladly be wrong about Cuadrado being bad though, come next season.

The lack of rotation has made our players quite jaded. Due credit must go to Eva Carneiro and her team for keeping the players injury free. Better attacking options from the bench is a must for our team if we are to progress any further in the Champions League next season. It is my humble opinion that the lack of rotation this year has been due to lack of trust by Mourinho on the bench rather than his obsession with Rhythm. We desperately require a box to box midfielder, a goal scoring winger, a backup striker and an able deputy to Matic and Fabregas. A quality goal scoring winger will reduce the pressure and over-reliance on Hazard to perform in every match.

Most of our requirements can be fulfilled by our youth: Ruben Loftus Cheek, Ake, I.Brown, Solanke, Patrick Bamford, Lewis Baker and many more. Add to that the talent returning to Cobham after their loan spells, and we can be quite self-sufficient in the years to come. However, Our Loan policy is not yet clear. But it is quite a tough task to integrate them into the main team considering Jose will again want to compete on all fronts next season. It is only fair to give our youth a chance though. Our new 40 Million Yokohama Sponsorship deal from next season, Money due to the double, etc. should easily leave us with the Millions to spend in the summer if need be. We could afford some big signings this summer as we have been coping well with the Financial Fair Play rule very well.

A Pogba – Oscar exchange deal will be a win-win situation, the former is also heavily linked with P$G. With Klopp leaving Dortmund at the end of the season, Reus might be available for transfer. Many big names are available this summer, and a big signing cannot be ruled out. We can afford more if Moses, Marin, Romeu, and other such players who are on loan and not good enough are sold. Jose knows too well that a lot of tweakings will only be detrimental to the campaign. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Mourinho clearly likes stability and rhythm and will not change the core of the team next season. The core will remain the same with a few quality additions to the team. Tired players do not provide stability, and so we can be sure of a deeper squad and more rotation next year. The summer is going to be interesting for sure. We will be a top contender for the Champions League soon if things go as expected.
