Chelsea have a fully fit team other than Oscar, who is ill, but could still make a timely recovery. If Oscar fails to make the starting line-up, Fabregas will be playing behind Costa, with Mikel alongside Matic. Costa is fully fit to start, and will look to improve his scoring records in away matches. Willian will replace Schurrle, with his work rate proving to be far more effective. Meanwhile, Azpilicueta may return to the starting eleven, having sat out the 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s. Terry and Cahill will continue in central defence with Ivanovic at right back. There are no suspension issues for this match.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham too have a fairly fit team, with Nabil Bentaleb the only doubt. Bentaleb missed the draw with Manchester United with illness, and will undergo a late fitness test on Thursday. Benjamin Stambouli will miss out on a starting berth if Bentaleb is deemed fit to start. Erik Lamela and Kyle Walker might return to the starting line-up. Harry Kane is expected to lead the line alongside Chadli and Lamela, with Eriksen and Mason behind them. Davies, Walker, Vertonghen and Fazio will make up the back four.

With Manchester City dropping points at home against Burnley, Chelsea managed to maintain their 3-point lead over second placed City, even after a draw at St. Mary’s. Going into the new year as league leaders, Chelsea will want to set the pace with nothing less than a win. Having been at the top of the table since day one, Chelsea boast the joint best attack with Manchester City, with 41 goals, and the meanest defence, conceding just 14. After losing at St. James’ Park, Chelsea won 3 league matches on the trot, and 5 in all competitions. With the Blues fighting it out in all competitions, fatigue has come into play, which was evident in the draw against Southampton. Costa, Hazard, Willian, Matic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic and Fabregas have played most of the matches, and thus, maintaining sharpness will be an important factor.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur sit at 6th in the table, and will be buoyed by their draw against Manchester United in their last match. Having been unbeaten in their last 5 matches, Tottenham know that a victory will take them to closer to 4th place, with 4th placed Southampton and 5th placed Arsenal playing each other in an early kick off. If that match is a draw, the Spurs will be level on points with both Southampton and Arsenal, with a win against Chelsea. Harry Kane, Eriksen and hero of the match against United, Hugo Lloris, look to be in fine form. Mauricio Pochettino will be reminding his team about Chelsea’s tired legs, and will be looking to play on the counter.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have played eachother 70 times at White Hart Lane, with Chelsea managing 26 wins and Tottenham winning 25. In these matches Tottenham have scored 115 goals, while Chelsea have scored 110 goals.
