Southampton vs Chelsea (1-1) – Individual Player Ratings

Well, that wasn’t how we expected to end this year. A draw against a high-flying Southampton in their own backyard isn’t the end of the world, I suppose. But, considering how we dominated the major part of the proceedings in the second half and still couldn’t manage to find a winner was particularly disappointing as a Blues fan.

But hey! Manchester City fluffed up a 2-0 lead, at Etihad, against a relegation battling side! That counts for something right? A heartily thanks to Santa for the late Christmas gift!

So, as it stands out, we are still top of the league, 3 points clear of our closest rival and en route to the Premier League title. But before that, let’s take a look on the individual player ratings to see how the game panned out for the players. Here it is:

There wasn’t much Courtois could have done to prevent that goal from Mane. Apart from that, the Belgian was calm and composed and as usual had a good commanding presence in the box.

JOHN TERRY: Rating – 5/10

One of the shakier performances by the captain in the recent memory. If he hadn’t tried to play Mane offside, the goal could have been avoided. Nearly blew the offside trap again after Shane Long came on to the pitch. Hopefully, it was just an off game.

GARY CAHILL: Rating – 7/10

Compared to his partner, Cahill had an overall better game. His tackle to deny a Tadic through ball in the 15th minute was the highlight of his game. The Englishman really seems to be back in form!

Tadic had a field day in the first half against the Serbian. Although a lot of it might have to do with Schurrle’s inability to track back but Ivanovic should have done better. Wasn’t a much of a threat going forward either.

FILIPE LUIS: Rating – 8/10

Luis had a good game as he combined well with Eden Hazard and was a real threat on the wings. His link-up play was pretty amazing for a full back. Apart from a couple of wayward crosses at the end, he was excellent.

NEMANJA MATIC: Rating – 7/10

Just like John Terry, Nemanja Matic seemed to have an off day at St. Mary’s yesterday. Maybe it has to do with the hectic schedule but the Serbian seemed to be struggling in the first-half. Although he did pull himself up in the second half, but this was far away from a normal Matic performance we have come to expect of him.

JOHN OBI MIKEL: Rating – 7/10

Playing alongside Matic, the Nigerian did his usual Mikel stuff, nothing spectacular but certainly good enough in the end.

EDEN HAZARD: Rating – 9/10

Man Of The Match for the second time in a row, or third? Honestly, I have lost count, that’s how good the Belgian is. His goal was certainly a thing of beauty, rounding off couple of defenders, before smashing his shot past Forster. Amazing talent he is. Now sign the damn contract Eden!

CESC FABREGAS: Rating – 8/10

Yet another assist for the midfield maestro. In fairness, the Spaniard should have been awarded a penalty but instead got booked for diving, Still, a good performance from Fabregas as he linked up well with Fabregas and Costa.

ANDRE SCHURRLE: Rating – 4/10

Slightly harsh, you say? Well, believe me, of all the people, I am the one who hopes the German to get back to his old form. But alas! he was largely non-existent in the first half in the attack as well as tracking back before he got subbed off.

DIEGO COSTA: Rating – 7/10

He huffed and puffed and finally had a good chance to get on the scoresheet in the second half when the Striker was one on one with Forster but alas, he lost his footing. Summed up his day!

WILLIAN: Rating – 7.5/10

The Brazilian came on for Schurrle at the start of second half and things finally started to click for Chelsea. He was really good with his link up play and also helped Ivanovic defensively. Basically, he did everything we hoped from Schurrle at the start of this game except scoring.

DIDIER DROGBA: Rating – 6/10

Came on for Mikel for the last 15 minutes. Had a couple of half chances but wasn’t able to convert them into goals.

LOIC REMY: Rating – N.A

Came on for Costa in the injury time. Didn’t have the opportunity to warrant any ratings.
