Chelsea will be hoping for a better result this time having lost the match 2-0 last year in this fixture.

Nemanja Matic picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday and is thus suspended for Saturday’s match, which comes as a bit of a blow for Chelsea considering the form he has been in. John Obi Mikel is expected deputise in his place. Goal machine Diego Costa will be back after missing out against Tottenham, after he was suspended for picking up 5 yellow cards, and will be looking to get back on the score sheet. Gary Cahill suffered a slight knock on Wednesday, after clashing heads with Vertonghen and was taken off at half time as a precautionary measure, but should be fit for Saturday’s match as he didn’t suffer a concussion according to Mourinho.

Newcastle United

Alan Pardew’s team is facing an injury crisis. This match comes too soon for goalkeeper Tim Krul, who is out with an ankle injury. Ryan Taylor and Siem De Jong remain sidelined along with long term absentees Gabriel Obertan and David Santon. Captain Fabricio Coloccini and winger Ronald Aarons face late fitness tests ahead of the match on Saturday. Alan Pardew has said that he would start playmaker Remy Cabella against Chelsea, who impressed after coming off the bench against Burnley, while Papiss Cisse, who looks to be in good goal scoring form, will start upfront.

After a tepid draw at Sunderland, Chelsea came back with a fantastic performance, routing Tottenham 3-0. Even without the brilliant Diego Costa the team made goal-scoring look easy. Didier Drogba and Loic Remy both got on the score sheet in Costa’s absence, while the rest of the team was its usual self. Still undefeated this season, Chelsea sit at the top of the table with 36 points, 6 more than 2nd placed Manchester City. St. James’ Park has been a difficult place for Chelsea. Last season this fixture ended 2-0 in favour of the Magpies, with current Chelsea player Loic Remy a scorer for Newcastle. The previous season too Newcastle won this match 3-2. Chelsea know that a similar slip-up this season would be very costly as Manchester City are in good form.

Newcastle United

Newcastle have lost just one of their last nine matches. A terrible start to the campaign, that prompted Newcastle supporters to flash banners of ‘Pardew Out’, has improved drastically. A run of six consecutive wins saw them come back to the top half of the table. They drew 1-1 against an improved Burnley side in the midweek fixture, and will be confident of getting a result against Chelsea, who have struggled to even come out with a point at St. James’ Park.

Chelsea have won only 4 times in the last 10 matches against Newcastle United. Newcastle too have won 4 times, with the rest two having finished as draws. Loic Remy, then a Newcastle United player, was the scorer of the second goal in this fixture last season.
