Eindhovens Dagblad has confirmed that PSV Eindhoven will lose talented defender Ian Maatsen to English giants Chelsea.
PSV has tried to convince the 16-year-old to remain in Eindhoven and offered him a three-year contract, but Maatsen has opted for a move to Chelsea.
The deal has not yet been confirmed but PSV are set to receive a training fee of €110,000 and a cut of any future transfer for the defender, who has been dubbed the “New Nathan Ake” in the English media.
Maatsen, who can play at right-back, centre-back or in midfield, is set to play in Chelsea’s U18’s next season.
Why Julen Lopetegui was selected by Real Madrid over Conte, Pochettino and Klopp
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has revealed why Real Madrid went for Julen Lopetegui as their new manager over Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea’s Antonio Conte.
Both head coaches had been linked with the role, however the La Liga side and Champions League winners announced that current Spain head coach Lopetegui will replace Zinedine Zidane once the World Cup is over.
The announcement came as something of a surprise, having never won a trophy as a manager with a domestic manager, but Balague explained that Conte, Pochettino and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp were not what Madrid wanted.
“It’s been surprising for everybody,” Balague told Sky Sports News. “But to be honest, the three names that had been linked to Real Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte, for different reasons didn’t fit the agenda.
“Pochettino, quite clearly, didn’t even have the chance to say yes or no because Real Madrid didn’t want to negotiate with Daniel Levy.
“They realised very quickly that Jurgen Klopp has got a very close link with Liverpool and they couldn’t get him out of there.
“And with Conte, they weren’t sure about if that was what’s needed for Real Madrid.
“So then it was just a matter of guessing and nobody out Julen Lopetegui’s name forward because we all thought he was focusing on the World Cup and he’s got a new contract with the national side.
“But, if you look at it from the point of view of Real Madrid, there weren’t really too many options out there.”
