CHELSEA’s potential summer move for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi hinges on one factor – Antonio Conte.
That is the verdict of ESPN FC pundit and former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner.
Icardi has been linked with a move for Icardi in the last few days.
Reports claim the Blues have made an initial £55million bid for the Argentine, with La Liga giants Real Madrid also keen on signing him.
Mariner admits Icardi would be a good signing for Chelsea but questions whether he would want to join when not knowing who the manager will be.
Antonio Conte is under pressure at Chelsea and many believe he will be on his way in the summer.
“I’m on the fence with this,” Mariner said.
“Icardi, obviously Conte would know him very, very well.
“But the problem is is Conte going to be at the club next season?
“So every single transfer rumour to Chelsea you’ve always got to sit on the fence, because you don’t know.
“As a player, are you going to go and play for Conte? Who are you going to play for?
“So I’m going to say at the moment, even though if Conte stays this will be a good signing, I’m going to say this is a miss at the moment.”
Icardi has scored 22 goals in 26 games for Inter Milan in all competitions this season.
