Veteran defender Gary Cahill is currently one of the most divisive figures at Chelsea. Some fans insist the club captain – who Transfermarkt value at £13.5million – still has what it takes, while others are certain he’s no longer good enough for a team chasing more titles.
With most of Chelsea’s defence set in stone, the left side of their back three is still up for grabs. Despite some good performances, 22-cap German Antonio Rüdiger hasn’t exactly made the position his own – although he started in the Champions League in midweek – while Cahill’s recent displays have been really poor.
Andreas Christensen was at fault against Barcelona on Tuesday, but it seems highly unlikely Antonio Conte would drop the young Dane. Christensen has had an exceptional season and dropping him now would only further dent his confidence after his mistake gave the visitors a crucial away goal.
With César Azpilicueta currently the first name on the team sheet as well, that just leaves one centre-back spot in true contention.
