Tiemoue Bakayoko isn’t good enough to merit a place in the Chelsea FC team, Andy Townsend says.
The defending Premier League champions signed Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 title holders AS Monaco last summer.
Bakayoko’s arrival led to the departure of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
Matic’s departure heaped pressure on the 23-year-old to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge given the void in midfield.
However, the summer signing has struggled to adapt to the Premier League after he took some time to get back to full fitness.
Bakayoko endured a torrid 30 minutes before he was sent off in Chelsea FC’s 4-1 loss at Watford earlier this month.
Former Chelsea FC defender Townsend believes Bakayoko still hasn’t got to the required level to shine in the Blues team.
“Bakayoko came to Chelsea in the summer,” Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live. “He wasn’t fit. He hasn’t got to the levels that are required.”
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season after finishing seven points above Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues relied heavily on Matic throughout the 2016-17 season but still sold the Serbia international to their title rivals.
Chelsea FC lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday following goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard.
