Antonio Conte believes Chelsea would be ‘stupid’ to show him the door despite a run of dreadful results.
Chelsea play West Brom on Monday night on the back of two embarrassing Premier League defeats and Conte’s position at the club is severely under threat as a result.
Conte needs his players to step up and beat the Baggies, knowing Chelsea have a history of discarding managers during difficult spells.
Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, is believed to have already started the hunt for Conte’s replacement, but the Italian insisted sacking him would be an unwise move.
‘In my opinion, you continue to work with a manager or coach not because of what he achieves in one season, but because you trust in him,’ Conte said ahead of Chelsea’s game against West Brom.
‘It doesn’t mean you have to win something, because that’s not simple – especially in England. In my vision, you can win but still the club might not be happy to stay with you – and for this reason, it’s right to send the coach away.
‘At the same time, you can trust in a coach and his work and continue with him even if you don’t win, and try and build something important.
‘I think there are two ways. There is a stupid way and an intelligent way.’
Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is one name being linked with the hotseat at Chelsea and the board is thought to have drawn up a provisional shortlist.
Conte and Chelsea have made a mess of defending the Premier League title they claimed last season, the Blues are 22 points being current leaders Manchester City.
Despite his firm warning to the board and the club, Conte insisted he would leave Stamford Bridge without a fuss.
‘This is just my opinion,’ Conte continued. ‘If the club decides to send me away, it’ll be because they’re not happy with my work.’
