Jamie Carragher has admitted that Marcos Alonso has proven the Liverpool FC legend wrong at Chelsea following his incredible impact at Stamford Bridge.
The defending Premier League champions signed the Spanish left-back in a £17m deal from Serie A giants Fiorentina in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Alonso scored six goals and made three assists in 31 games in Chelsea’s title-winning season as the former Bolton Wanderers defender thrived in a wing-back role.
The 27-year-old, who spent a couple of seasons at Sunderland, has managed to maintain his high-performance level in the 2017-18 season following a return of six goals in 22 outings.
Alonso scored a right-footed finish with six minutes to go at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night in a 2-2 draw with their bitter rivals Arsenal.
Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher believes Alonso has been a revelation in the Premier League since his move to Chelsea.
“What a signing Alonso’s been,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Twelve goals since he came to this country. He had previously been at Sunderland and Bolton.
“When Chelsea signed him, I thought it was a bit of a strange signing to be honest. Could he play at this level? But he’s been absolutely outstanding.”
Chelsea are in third place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of second-placed Manchester United in the race to secure a top-four finish.
The defending champions will take on La Liga leaders Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 next month.
Antonio Conte has never led a team to Europe’s premier club competition.
