Antonio Conte will be upset with Chelsea’s transfer chiefs for not landing Virgil van Dijk, Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson claims.
Liverpool agreed a world-record £75m for the Southampton defender last week, who will link up with the Reds today.
And Reds hero Thompson says Conte will be upset about Chelsea not being able to outbid Liverpool for Van Dijk, adding that the Blues must sign a new centre-half.
“They are another side who were probably looking to entice Virgil van Dijk, so Conte will probably be questioning why Liverpool were able to outbid themselves with such an outlay and they may feel disappointed they missed out there,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“I think that will upset the manager and the fans as they don’t want to be left behind.”
Conte has broken his silence on Diego Costa.
The Spain international has returned to Atletico Madrid after a bust-up with the Blues boss.
And Conte admits he has no hard feelings after Costa’s departure.
“It’s not right to talk about players who are not in my team and squad,” he said.
“But I thank him for his commitment and behaviour during the season.
“We won together, so I will always remember him in a positive way. We fought together and won together.”
Chelsea target Alex Sandro could leave Juventus, with the Italian giants lining up Bayer Leverkusen full-back Wendell.
The Daily Mirror say the Blues and Manchester United are chasing the Brazil international.
And they add that Juve have upped their interest in Wendell, which would allow Sandro to move to the Premier League this month if the right offer is tabled.
