Deal secured: Chelsea Star off to Newcastle Utd in January after 2-1 win over Bournemouth

Thursday morning has seen reports that Rafa Benitez has ‘secured a loan deal’ Kenedy.

The Chelsea player can play all down the left-hand side, from left back to left wing.

On Wednesday (last) night Kenedy played the full 90 minutes as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 2-1 to progress into the League Cup semi-finals.

If you remember, for much of the summer it was claimed the Brazilian was definitely coming to Newcastle United on loan for the season.

There was even an embarrassing exclusive from The Mirror (see below) that stated as fact on 9 August 2017, that Kenedy had signed for Rafa Benitez. Only for the player to turn up three days later sitting on the Chelsea bench, an unused sub as the blues lost 3-2 at home to Burnley on the opening day of the season.

He made four early-season appearances as an unused sub on the Chelsea bench for Premier League matches to cover early season injury/fitness problems, which meant Kenedy didn’t go out on loan. However, his only playing involvement this season has been three League Cup starts, whilst he made the Champions League bench as an unused sub twice.

It is The Mail who have now first ran with the story of Rafa Benitez having ‘secured a loan deal’ for the player, though they do add a proviso that this will happen just so long as Chelsea pick up no left side injuries before the January window opens.

There are any number of positions where Newcastle could do with new players but certainly down the left side there is a need for extra quality, even with Paul Dummett now coming back to full fitness. Christian Atsu has had an up and down time on the wing, whilst despite glimpses of quality, Jacob Murphy hasn’t convinced as a Premier League starter as yet.

Kenedy was bought for around £8m two years ago from Fluminese.

With 549 minutes and one goal for Chelsea in the Premier League in 2015/16, then only another 75 league minutes for the Blues and 15 minutes on loan at Watford last season, fair to say his career wasn’t on an upward curve.

The summer saw the winger sent home in disgrace by Chelsea after upsetting their Chinese hosts, after Kenedy insulted locals by posting on social media: ‘Damn China’ and ‘Wake up China, you idiot’.

The Mirror – 9 August 2017:

‘Rafa Benitez has snapped up Chelsea outcast Kenedy on a season’s loan.

Newcastle’s boss offered the Brazilian an escape route to the north-east after learning he was up for grabs.

Benitez has moved quickly to secure the deal using well-established contacts made during his spell in charge of the club four years ago.

And the winger will offer the Tyneside giants added impetus going forward as the Spaniard continues his re-building of the Magpies.’
