Chelsea will have to compete with rival’s £80m war chest to seal key signing

Manchester United have joined Chelsea in the battle to sign left back Alex Sandro from Juventus, according to Daily Record journalist Duncan Castles.

The Scottish newspaper reports that the Brazilian international has made it clear to Juve’s hierarchy that he wants to leave the Serie A champions for the Premier League.

Up until this point the Blues have been the likeliest candidates to sign Sandro after a summer long pursuit of the full back, but it seems United will now enter the running for the 26 year old in the January transfer window.

Juventus are said to be unwilling to let the player leave in January unless they receive an astronomical fee for the defender, but the Daily Record reports that United could use the vast majority of their £80m transfer kitty on signing the left back.

Earlier this week, Juve’s chief executive Giuseppe Marotta indicated for the first time that the club may consider selling Sandro, and reports from Italy do suggest that the club are actively seeking a replacement for him with Valencia’s Jose Gaya being lined up.

United’s entry into the race will no doubt make things more complicated for Chelsea, who are keen to strengthen the left hand side with Marcos Alonso having already played 21 times this season.
