‘A blessing in disguise’ – fan reaction mixed over Chelsea’s second place group stage finish

Chelsea fans have responded to their team’s failure to secure the top spot in Group C with both mild rage and hopeful reflection.

After Roma beat Qarabag at home in their final match of the Champions League group phase, the Blues had to beat Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge to stay in first place.

Yet they could only draw and due to their inferior head-to-head record with the Italians they slumped to second place, and are now at the mercy of a draw for the knockout stages that could pit them against Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain.

Had they finished as group winners then Chelsea would have enjoyed an easier draw for the round of 16, at least in theory. Bayern Munich finished second to PSG and would have been a potential hazard for the Blues had Antonio Conte managed to delivery the top spot.

Perhaps this is why some supporters are looking on the bright side in contrast to the doom and gloom from those who were disappointed to come second.

A full range of emotions and reactions could be found on Twitter.

Chelsea’s next game in the Premier League will be away to West Ham at the London Stadium, and with Conte still determined to defend the title he won in his first season as manager last term the champions will be doing all that they can to get back to winning ways at the weekend.

The draw for the Champions League round of 16 will take place on Monday.
