RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK is better than Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
That is according to pundit and former Arsenal forward Ian Wright.
Crystal Palace star Loftus-Cheek, who is on loan from Chelsea, made his England debut last night in the 0-0 draw with Germany.
The 21-year-old earned the Man of the Match award for his display and has given Gareth Southgate a selection headache ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Brazil.
Whether Loftus-Cheek has done enough to warrant some game-time for Chelsea when he returns from his loan spell is yet to be seen.
However, Wright believes he is better than a player the Blues spent £40m on in the summer.
“I watched Bakayoko the other day up front or playing further forward against Manchester United and he never done anything in that game that made me think that he’s a better player than Loftus-Cheek,” Wright told ITV Sport.
“Now I’m not knocking Chelsea because Chelsea can do whatever they want but the fact is that surely you’ve got to give the guy a chance.
“I’ve seen him and he’s better than Bakayoko for me.”
Loftus-Cheek will be hoping to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad next year.
And the youngster expressed his delight at starting last night.
“If we won it would have been better but I’m really happy,” he said.
“It was a really tactical game. It was good for us young players and I certainly learned a lot.
“The manager has said do your best. I had Gareth in charge for nearly three years at the Under-21s and the boys have been great.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek explains why he decided to leave Chelsea
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has lifted the lid on his decision to leave Chelsea to join Crystal Palace on loan.
The Chelsea midfielder opted to leave Stamford Bridge in search of regular first-team football after struggling to hold down a regular spot in the first team in recent seasons.
The 21-year-old has made one assist in seven Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace this season as he bids to try and help the Eagles avoid relegation under Roy Hodgson.
Loftus-Cheek is considered as one of Chelsea’s most promising youngster, but he has not yet been able to force his way into a regular spot in the first team at Stamford Bridge.
And the midfielder has now lifted the lid on why he opted to leave Chelsea on loan in the summer in search of regular football.
Loftus-Cheek is quoted as saying by Sky Sports: “I had a vision and it became quite strong that I wanted to go from Chelsea.
“I felt like I needed to play a lot, so I came in and said I wanted to go away from Chelsea and play games. So we came to an agreement.
“You can only improve so much in training. Games and training are completely different. So for me to get to that next level I needed to play regular football.
“I thought it was the best decision to go from Chelsea to play and develop myself which looks like being a good thing.”
