The Premier League champions snapped up six new players during the summer window but were left stung by three high-profile snubs.
Romelu Lukaku rejected a return to Stamford Bridge to link up with Jose Mourinho again at Manchester United.
A fee was agreed with Arsenal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but he decided to join Liverpool.
While Everton midfielder Ross Barkley pulled out of a switch on deadline day.
Barkley has since been forced to deny claims he made his U-turn during a medical.

They are coming under increasing pressure about their success.

Chelsea spent around £170m on Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger, Willy Caballero, Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater.
But head coach Antonio Conte is also fuming.
He has a limited role in the club’s transfer policy and wants explanations for the failure to sign key targets.
Conte was forced to name a string of youngsters on the bench for the opening-day defeat to Burnley.

Diego Costa deletes Instagram account as Chelsea remain in the dark over striker’s AWOL.
Chelsea may find it more difficult to keep tabs on AWOL striker Diego Costa now after the Spaniard deleted his Instagram account.
The 28-year-old was told via text message this summer by boss Antonio Conte that he had no future at the Stamford Bridge club – despite playing a key role in the club’s Premier League success last term.
Conte and Costa were reportedly involved in a furious row but the striker was unable to force a dream return move to Atletico Madrid in the transfer window.
The reasons why he decided to discard his social media profile on Instagram, which had 2.3 millions followers, are not known – but the Blues were believed to be following his activity – which included several videos of Costa training in the gym and on the treadmill.
While Costa was surprisingly named in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad for this campaign, he is still in his hometown of Lagarto in Brazil and is being fined approximately £300,000 each and every two weeks he is absent.
